Plants & Flowers That Are Harmful to Dogs
Most dog owners are aware of not giving their dog chocolate; as it is known to be poisonous to them (actually it's the Theobromine compound that's naturally found in chocolate that that causes the problems). Some may also be aware of grapes, raisins and walnuts - but how many dog owners actually think about checking their garden and house plants?
Plants that give a rash after contact:
Chrysanthemums (also may cause dermatitis) Poinsettia Spider plant Weeping and Creeping Figs
Plants that irritate the mouth - possibly causing swollen mouth, lips, tongue; presenting breathing problems:
Arrowhead Vine Boston Ivy Marble Queen Pothos Majesty Palm Neththytis Ivy Philodendrons
Plants that are toxic include:
Amaryllis Arrow Grass Asparagus Fern Azaleas Bird of Paradise Buttercup Crown of Thorns Foxglove Hyacinth (bulb) Horse Chestnut Iris (bulb) Jasmine berries Mistletoe Morning Glory Narcissus (bulb) Needlepoint Ivy Rhododendron Umbrella Plant Wisteria
Fruit and vegetable plants that may cause issues to your dog include:
Apricot Cherry tree Elderberry (foliage) Potatoes Rhubarb Spinach Tomato Vine
You can get a comprehensive list of potentially harmful or poisonous plants from the ASPCA or your local Dogs Trust.
Obviously most dogs will avoid plants that are toxic or poisonous to them however, you need to take extra care with puppies, teething dogs that will chew anything and older dogs that love chewing. It is worth taking the time to walk around your garden, making a note of the plants you have. That way you can make the decision to either protect or remove the offending plants. Remember, your dog will probably avoid those plants that may give him problems - but sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry.
So what are the symptoms? These include depression, lack of appetite, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. If these symptoms are left to progress, they can also lead to dehydration, drooling, diarrhea, breathing difficulties and renal failure.
If you are at all worried that your dog has eaten something he shouldn't, take him to the vets immediately or as soon as you possibly can, to get him checked out. If you are sure he has eaten a plant, take a cutting or sample of the plant with you, to enable the vet to determine what it is.
It isn't just your dog you should worry about. Next time you decide to send a friend a bouquet of flowers - make sure you think of their dog too and avoid any potentially harmful flowers. After all, you want to send them wishes - not something you will regret.

What is True Bulbs
The word bulb is often used to describe true bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes and plants with fleshy root systems that can cope with long periods of drought by storing food reserves beneath the ground. There are, however, clear differences between these five types of plants.
The inside of a true bulb consists of stems and fleshy leaves that have been modified for storage. In tulip, hyacinth and daffodil bulbs the modified leaves are layered closely around each other, with the outer leaves, which are often dry and brown, forming a tunic around the bulb.
In other bulbs the leaves are not wrapped around each other but overlap, producing a far more succulent bulb. These bulbs are known as scaly bulbs, and the lily is one of the best known examples.
Individual bulbs usually survive for many years in the ground, during which time the old ones will produce offsets or daughter bulbs and thus create small groups. Some tulip bulbs are unlikely to produce flowers for a second year, but the bulb will form replacement bulbs, which then flower the following year.
Inside all corms there is a stem that is swollen and adapted to store food. This forms the base of the new shoots. Unlike true bulbs, corms appear solid throughout. After flowering, a new corm, formed at the base of the new stem, will grow on top of the old one and the old corm will die.
Each corm, therefore, has only one season in which to produce a flower. Small young corms will also form on the basal plate, which is slightly concave. Crocosmias, gladioli and crocuses are all cormous plants.

Bulbs, Tubers, Corms and Rhizomes
Bulbs are a large group of flowers that produce beautiful displays year after year and require little care. Included with true bulbs are corms, rhizomes, tubers and tuberous roots. Plan your garden and yard program to create a colorful display that will continue to bloom from early spring through late fall. Make a list to see which will work best for you, how many of each bloom you will need and the color scheme you would like to create. Early bloomers include crocus, tulips, hyacinth, daffodils, lilies and iris. These are considered hardy bulbs. Different varieties of all of these flowers bloom at various times throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons.
Plant your bulbs in the fall before a deep frost hardens the ground. In areas with frigid winters, plant early so bulbs can produce a good root system. The areas you have chosen for your flowers should provide a little shade at the warmest times of the day. This will help your flowers thrive and grow bigger and better. Drainage of the soil is another important factor in the growth of healthy plants. In heavy clay soil mix in sand and peat and work it to a depth of twelve inches. If soil is sandy add peat or compost.
To prepare the bed it is wise to add a fertilizer high in calcium, phosphorous and magnesium. Work it into the soil evenly or you can work in bone meal at the bottom of the bed, if you prefer. After flowers start blooming, add a well balanced fertilizer. Bulbs are planted between 3 and 9 inches deep and several inches apart depending on the variety of the plant you have chosen. Planting a little deeper can produce healthier flowers. Placing a cluster of the same color makes a dramatic display. As you plant the bulbs it is a good idea to label each area with the color and name of what is located there.
In the fall, to avoid the danger of pests, such as mice, clean all areas of the lawn and garden of waste. Plant bulbs away from walls and house foundations. If any plant or bulb look diseased or are infested with insects, it is better to remove and destroy them to prevent the spread of these pests.
Some tender bulbs, corms and tubers include dahlia, gladiolus, and caladium. Caladiums are actually richly colored leaves that prefer shady areas. They require special care and must be dug up before the frost and stored for the winter in a cool dry place. Gladiolus is a favorite of all gardeners. They make beautiful cut flower arrangements inside the home. At about 6 to 8 weeks after the last blooms fade or after the first frost, cut tops to a few inches above the corm then place in a box or old onion sack. Store in a cool dry room at 40 degrees. The calla lily and the canna lily are best planted in corners or borders of the yard. Dig up the flowers near the first frost. Calla lilies should be dug up and dried in the shade for a few days, and then placed in a box and covered with sawdust or sphagum moss. Canna lilies should be dug up near the first frost and stored as is, leaving about 14 inches of the top attached. Store for a a couple of weeks in a warm room, then dust with fungicide and hang up with stems down. Store both lilies at about 50 degrees and keep dry through the winter months.
Now you can rest and relax for a while until you are ready to start this procedure all over again.

Fragrant Spring-Blooming Bulb Collection
This week we have assembled a collection of fragrant spring blooming flower bulbs. We have chosen those that we believe to be the most fragrant of all. It happens that many are heirloom varieties. Ideal for planting in small clusters in little nooks throughout the garden. Several of the varieties are good for forcing indoors also.
Grape Hyacinth 'Golden Fragrance'
A new grape hyacinth with a gentle sweet fruity perfume, Muscari macrocarpum 'Golden Fragrance' blooms in April with unusual spikes of soft yellow that emerge from purple buds. The only grape hyacinth with yellow blossoms! Plant in full sun or very light shade. Height is 6 inches.
Tulip 'General De Wet'
The most fragrant tulip of all. A single early tulip that dates back about 100 years, it originated as a sport of Prince of Austria. The fiery orange blooms stipled with scarlet come in April. 'General De Wet' grows 12-14 inches tall. Plant in full sun. Of all the tulips, it is unsurpassed for forcing.
Narcissus jonquilla 'Simplex'
The true original jonquil that has been grown since the mid 1700s. It blooms in late April with several small golden yellow side-facing flowers with small cups. They are sweetly fragrant and are borne on sturdy 10 inch stems. The foliage is slender and reed-like. Jonquilla 'Simplex' naturalizes into nice little colonies. All narcissus are virtually deer proof.
Narcissus triandrus 'Thalia'
'Thalia' has pure white blooms borne in gently nodding clusters of 2-3 per stem. An heirloom variety dating back to 1916, 'Thalia' grows about 12 inches tall and blooms in very late April to early May. 'Thalia' is known for its fragrance and prefers a moist semi-shaded location where it will naturalize splendidly. Native to Spain and Portugal.
Multiple Flowered Narcissus 'Geranium'
'Geranium' is one of my favorite daffodils because it is amongst the last to bloom with a nice display of long-lasting blooms borne 3-5 per strong stem. It is extremely fragrant and naturalizes well in full sun to very light shade. Excellent for forcing. A true heirloom, it has been grown for about 80 years. It grows to 16 inches tall.
Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket'
Hyacinths are known to be the most fragrant of the spring blooming bulbs. Many people consider 'Blue Jacket' to be the most fragrant of all the hyacinths. They can be forced indoors or can be planted in masses out doors. We particularly like 'Blue Jacket' for its strong sturdy stems and its densely filled tubular spikes that are filled with florets right to the top. The flowers are particularly long lasting. They grow to be 10 inches tall.
Hyacinth 'Woodstock'
'Woodstock' combines delicious fragrance with fine spikes of rich plum purple. Hyacinths naturalize in well drained soil in full sun and they are deer resistant. Height 10 inches tall.

Fall Bulbs For Spring Blooms
Fall bulbs are, naturally, planted in the fall and flower in the spring. Many believe that they should be planted in the early spring, believing that the winter frosts can harm them. In fact nothing could be farther from the truth.
Bulbs, corms and rhizomes are all classed as bulbs for the purposes of fall planting. Fall bulbs need the cold of winter earth to prompt them to start growing and form a healthy root system, and a newly planted bulb will remain dormant until the ground temperature reaches 5 - 10 Celsius (40 - 50F). If you have an early fall frost and a mild winter, you will find bulbs starting to peek above the ground in January rather than March, and if your winter is mild, your bulbs will grow, but the roots will not be strong. The bigger the bulb, the more important a frost for their root system.
The cold of winter is essential for them. That is something to keep in mind when considering planting time, and with global warming sometimes causing mild falls, you might want to plant your bulbs later in the season - around November or December. Whatever you plan to do, you should make up your mind early exactly what you want to plant.
You have a very wide choice of plants and colors. You can get most colors from bulbs these days thanks to the wonders of hybridization, and there is no reason why your spring garden should not be a riot of yellows, reds, pinks, blues and purples. Add to that the snowy white of snowdrops and your garden should look great. However, keep in mind that not all of the different plants bloom at the same time, so choose carefully if you have planned a garden around that.
Possibilities are the snowdrops already mentioned that look fabulous when grown in large clumps, and then crocuses, lilies, tulips, daffodils and other narcissi, hyacinths and alliums. There are also irises and many others, most of which are available in a multitude of different colors. Towards the end of summer the garden stores will be full of them, and also the general stores, outdoor centers and even department stores. You will find pages and pages of sites online, and if you Google 'fall bulbs' you will have so much choice you will likely never want to stop looking!
Many gardeners like to color theme their gardens using fall bulbs, or to layer them with the smaller plants at the front and larger at the back. That is when you should check the estimated flowering times since you don't want the yellows coming out in March but the reds leaving it till June! The same with the sized planting: you could have a big bare patch in your garden while the middle sized bulbs leave it till May to flower. All of this information should be on the pack, but if not you can get the information online for your specific bulb.
The bulbs should be planted when the soil temperature drops to at least 10 Celsius (50F), and should be two bulb thicknesses deep. Make sure you plant them the right way up! They like a well drained soil that holds moisture, and if you add a thickness of compost below the bulb by digging the hole a bit deeper, this will provide the needed drainage, moisture and nutrition required for the first year's growth.
Old bulbs should be fed with a top dressing of a good bulb fertilizer, and clumps separated every now and again to promote more vigorous growth. Bulbs like a sunny spot in the garden, where they are exposed to about 5 - 6 hours of light daily. Under a tree or beside a wall that shades them from the sun are not suitable, and growth will be slow. Once they have been planted you just leave them and they will look after themselves. The fall bulbs don't mind frost and snow, unlike summer planting bulbs that should be lifted over the winter.
Anybody who would like a nice show of blooms in the spring should plant fall bulbs. You can design your spring garden in any way you want so long as you are acquainted with the bulbs, corms or rhizomes that you are planting. They are easy to look after, and are the ideal solution for the amateur gardener that wants to impress the neighbors in March.

A Few of the Best Spring Flowering Bulbs for Containers
For a real showy display of flowers in spring time there is nothing better than large pots of spring bulbs to create a focal point in the garden. Almost all spring flowering bulbs can be planted in containers, but there are a few considerations you need to take into account when creating your display. It is not a good idea to plant miniature or short bulbs in a very large container as they will just look lost. At the same time, large bulbs in a small container will over balance it as they grow upwards. Also be careful with colour. A planter filled with the same variety of bulb can look stunning, but equally, a mix of bulbs of a similar colour pallet will look just as good.
The best time to plant spring flowering bulbs in containers is from October to December, before the first frosts. If you are using a terracotta pot with a drainage hole in the bottom place a layer of broken crocks inside before planting as this will aid drainage. Fill your chosen pot with general purpose compost mixed with a couple of handfuls of horticultural grit to help with drainage. If you are filling the container with the same variety of bulb, pack the bulbs in close together to ensure a really great show. Check the packet for the correct depth to plant the bulbs and cover over with compost. Water the container well and place in your chosen spot.
There are many varieties of spring flowering bulbs that look good in containers. Use an old galvanised tub as a planter for bright yellow daffodils. Straight stemmed red tulips look stunning in lead or faux lead planters. Place them either side of a front door for a really stunning display. Plant crocus bulbs in smaller containers, old walking boots are ideal and add a quirky twist to a door step or corner of a patio. Equally as nice are dwarf varieties of daffodil and tulip planted in wicker baskets. Short varieties of fritillaria and allium look stunning in terracotta bowls or low troughs. Place them on the flat top of a wall or in groups up the side of stone steps. Grape hyacinths are a great favourite and look good in small long toms and zinc planters. Plant dwarf iris in an old cup and saucer and place on your window sill. Hyacinth bulbs are also lovely to have indoors and will fill the room with their fresh heady scent. The type of garden planters you can use are endless. But you will always find something either vintage, modern or just a bit quirky that will set off your chosen bulbs a treat and help herald the arrival of another spring.

How to Plant Spring Flower Bulbs
Spring is the favorite season of many. It is a time of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation. One of the greatest joys of spring is the beautiful assortment of flowers. You can get this joy at home by planting spring flower bulbs. These are bulbs that bloom in early spring while other plants are still developing.
There are many spring flowering bulbs, but some of the most popular are crocus, tulip, narcissus, and hyacinth. These bulbs should be planted before the ground freezes, preferably in late September or early October. This enables them to develop a strong root system before the first frost.
Spring flower bulbs should be planted in an area that drains well. Bulbs will rot in standing water. They must also receive adequate sunshine--at least six hours daily. The soil doesn't need any special treatment, but it should be loose and workable. If you are working a new area, you might want to add some compost or peat moss.
When it comes time to dig the hole, follow the package directions. Most bulbs will require a depth of six to eight inches, but loosen the soil for an additional four inches. Place the bulb in the ground with the pointy end facing up. Pack the dirt firmly and water thoroughly.
Spring flower bulbs require very little care. Simply water them occasionally, and add a mulch cover when cold weather comes. With a little water, sunshine, and luck, you will be blessed with beautiful, fragrant blooms in early spring.
