Rehearsal Dinner Flowers
An important wedding weekend is the rehearsal dinner. This occasion can be as relaxed or as formal as you like, so it is fun to decorate. Although it will not be as elaborately decorated as the wedding, you will definitely want to have pretty flowers for your rehearsal dinner.
The rehearsal dinner is usually hosted by the groom's parents, and the bride is just a guest of honor. That means that unless you are specifically asked, you will probably not get a lot of say in how the rehearsal dinner is done. This is just fine, because the last thing that a busy bride needs is one more thing to organize!
Although the bride and groom are the guests of honor at the rehearsal dinner, it might also be a nice time for them to give a little something to their parents. The end of the evening would be a lovely time to present special gifts of wedding jewelry to the mothers of the bride and groom. Very often the couple will want to give their moms gifts of classic wedding jewelry, such as black pearls in honor of the occasion, and to thank them for all of their support.
The rehearsal dinner is a great time for the two families to get to know each other before the wedding. It does not need to be similar in style to the wedding. This means that a formal sit down wedding reception for 300 could be preceded by a clam bake on the beach. You could also have an elegant rehearsal dinner in a club followed by an informal backyard reception after the nuptials. When it comes to the rehearsal dinner, anything goes.
Since you can really do anything you want for the rehearsal dinner, you will have a lot of flexibility on the flowers. In general, it is nice to match them to either the location or the season (or both). Displays do not need to be elaborate or overly abundant; in fact, the groom's mother would not want to plan for floral displays that are more impressive than the centerpieces for the wedding, as it might embarrass the bride and her family.
Simple styles will work best, and need not be particularly expensive. For instance, for an autumn wedding, potted mums would make lovely centerpieces for the rehearsal dinner. They are seasonal, affordable, and can be taken home and planted afterwards. It would be really sweet if the groom's mother planted them in the newlyweds' yard as a surprise for when they get home from their honeymoon.
There are many other flowers that would be great choices for a rehearsal dinner. Hydrandea are beautiful summer flowers, and they come in some very pretty colors, such as white, pink, blue, pale green, and gold. They are also a very full flower, so a few will go a long way. If the rehearsal dinner is fairly casual, a few hydrangea popped into a white pitcher or a galvanized bucket looks fantastic. For a dinner in a more elegant setting, the hydrangea work wonderfully paired with roses in a low footed container.
Spring has many wonderful flowers as well. A very pretty centerpiece for a rehearsal dinner would be hyacinth planted in a small painted vase. They have a wonderful soft fragrance, and nothing says "spring" like bulbs. One of the favorite flowers of spring is the tulip. Although they can get pricey at a florist, you can often find tulips inexpensively at your local grocery store. After all, you want your rehearsal dinner to be nice, but it doesn't need to be extravagant - save that for the wedding reception!
